On the Italian island of Ischia, a married woman works on a writing project while struggling inside a loveless marriage. Restless and troubled, she meets a carefree younger American whose presence draws her into an affair and a sexual awakening. As desire interrupts her routine, she is forced to confront the distance between the life she has and the one she begins to want.
