Maya Doolittle struggles to fit in at school because of her unusual gift: she can talk to animals. Hoping a change will help her find herself, her mother, Lisa Dolittle, sends her to Durango, a dude ranch where life is less about fitting in and more about hard work. As Maya adjusts to ranch life, her talent becomes important when Durango faces the threat of being taken over by a neighboring ranch.
