In a racially divided Los Angeles school, young teacher Erin Gruwell is assigned a class of at-risk students many have dismissed as incapable of learning. Determined to reach them, she encourages her students to challenge their assumptions, learn tolerance, take their education seriously, and begin to see a future for themselves beyond high school.
