Imitation of Life

In 1940s New York, a white widow with dreams of a Broadway career has a chance encounter with an African American widow raising a mixed-race daughter. The woman becomes her maid, and the two mothers’ lives become closely linked as ambition, work, and family pressures shape their uneasy household, including a young girl who is desperate to be seen as white.
