In a poor Estonian village, daily life is shaped by hunger, cold, and old beliefs. As winter closes in, the peasants turn to magic, folk remedies, and whatever traditions might help them endure the season. Amid this struggle to survive, a young woman focuses on a different desire: winning the love of a young man who remains out of reach.
