Marion Crane, a real estate clerk, flees with a wad of cash after committing embezzlement, hoping to leave her old life behind and start over. On the run through California, she stops at the secluded Bates Motel, a quiet roadside refuge managed by Norman Bates, a repressed young man who lives under the shadow of his housebound, overbearing mother.
